Informative didactics recount the night that Mary Shelley conceived of the Frankenstein story and the influence of her creative contemporaries, and follow the evolution of her ‘Creature’ in pop culture over the past 200 years!

First published in 1818, Shelley’s novel is a complex tale of the quest to create life, of wrenching emotional loss, and of a bloody rampage of revenge. The novel also explores the pursuit of knowledge and the longing for love and acceptance from the perspective of a misunderstood outsider. Films, games, and pop culture parodies have helped her iconic Creature remain relevant for 200 years.

Scholars consider Frankenstein the first science fiction novel in part for its examination of the tension between science and natural laws, as well as the unintended consequences of a living science experiment turning against its creator. This exhibit is designed for smaller spaces and budgets.
